About Venessa
Hi! I'm Venessa, an author, editor, and publishing professional who has spent more than 20 years immersed in the world of books.
My MA and MFA in Writing Popular Fiction gave me a strong foundation in the craft of storytelling and the conventions of popular fiction. I've spent the last couple decades building on that foundation.
I've worked on both sides of the publishing desk—as an editor helping other authors develop their careers and as a writer building my own. I've worked in traditional publishing and with indie authors, provided editorial and publishing consulting, written and published fiction, and spent years teaching writers through workshops and classes.
One of the things I love most about working with writers is that no two careers look alike. Whether you're writing fantasy, romance, mystery, or something else entirely, some writers want to pursue traditional publishing; others thrive in self-publishing. Some are building a long-term career, while others have one particular story they desperately want to get into the world. There isn't a single definition of success, and I enjoy helping writers figure out what success means for them.
Because I'm an author myself, I understand the particular combination of excitement, uncertainty, stubbornness, and occasional existential crisis that comes with trying to build a life around making things up and putting them on paper. I've been on this road for a long time, and I know how much easier it can be to make good decisions when you have someone who understands the territory.
If you're ready to take a closer look at where your writing career could go, let's talk.

Author career coaching is a one-on-one conversation about where you are as a writer, where you'd like to go, and how to get there. Every writer's path looks different, so rather than handing you a generic roadmap, we'll look at your goals, your circumstances, and the options available to you.
Depending on what you're working toward, we might talk about:
* Defining your goals and figuring out what you want your writing career to look like
* Choosing between traditional publishing, self-publishing, hybrid approaches, or a combination
* Evaluating publishing opportunities and deciding which ones make sense for you
* Building your readership and developing an author platform
* Creating a writing and publishing schedule that works with your life
* Deciding what to work on next, including new genres, series, or projects
* Understanding the business side of being an author
* Working through a career decision when you're not sure which direction to take
We'll start each session by talking about what's on your mind and what you'd like to accomplish. From there, we'll dig into the questions, decisions, or challenges you're facing and work through them together. You might leave with a concrete plan and some next steps, or simply a clearer picture of your options. Either way, the goal is for you to feel more confident about where you're headed.
I bring more than 20 years of experience in publishing as an author, editor, and publishing consultant, along with an MA and MFA in Writing Popular Fiction. I've worked with writers at many different stages, and I've learned that there isn't one "right" way to build a writing career. What matters is finding an approach that fits you.
This coaching focuses on strategy, decision-making, and career development rather than full manuscript editing. If you're unsure what kind of editorial help your work needs, that's something we can talk through, too.
My specialties: My deepest expertise is in urban fantasy, horror, fantasy, mystery/thriller/suspense, and romance at all spice levels. My broader publishing and editorial experience also extends to other fiction genres.
A note for international writers: I'm based in the United States, so my publishing and industry experience is primarily rooted in the U.S. market. If you're pursuing a different publishing path, we will learn about your specific options together.

I didn't learn English from her, but I hired Venessa to edit my book about five years ago and I've worked with her on three other books since. She's always taken the time to explain why she felt something needed to be changed and never made me feel silly for asking questions or for more information. I hope she's available when I'm finished with my current book, because I want to work with her again!
I have known Venessa for about 3 years now. I met her through our shared love of writing. She is an outstanding, compassionate, and patient teacher and facilitator. She has a way of explaining things very simply without making it feel like she is talking down to you. Her lectures and courses have always been very enjoyable, maintaining the balance between fun and highly informative with a skill that I have seen few master. She is thorough and patient while answering questions, even if they are repeat questions and always makes understanding for all students her primary goal.
