About Fan
Hello! My name is Fan. My name can be understood as “down-to-earth” in Chinese, and that reflects the approach I bring to teaching: thoughtful, supportive, and practical.
I hold a PhD in English Literature, with research experience in environmental ethics, experimental poetry, and postcolonial writing. Years of academic research, teaching, and writing have given me a strong understanding of what makes an argument persuasive, a thesis focused, and an essay clear, coherent, and engaging.
I particularly enjoy helping students with English Literature, literary analysis, and academic writing across the humanities. Whether you are working on an essay, dissertation, research proposal, close reading, or another academic assignment, I can help you develop your ideas and express them with greater clarity and confidence.
My tutoring goes beyond correcting grammar or polishing individual sentences. I focus on helping you become a stronger reader, thinker, and writer. We can work together on close reading, developing a clear argument, turning broad ideas into a focused thesis, using textual evidence effectively, structuring essays and paragraphs, improving academic style, and refining your own writing.
I also help students develop a more systematic and confident approach to reading and interpretation. Rather than teaching you to work against your instincts, I want to help you understand and refine them. Often, a reader already senses that a passage is interesting, strange, moving, or important before they can fully explain why. We can start from that instinct and then look more closely at the language, structure, imagery, form, or context that creates that response.
My role is not to replace your instincts as a reader, but to help you make them more precise, systematic, and persuasive. Over time, literary analysis can begin to feel less like searching for the “correct” answer and more like learning how to trust, question, and develop your own interpretation.
At the heart of my teaching is the exchange of ideas. I see tutoring as a collaborative conversation rather than simply giving students answers. I want to create a space where you can test ideas, follow your curiosity, ask questions, explore different interpretations, and develop your own perspective.
My aim is not only to help you produce a stronger essay, but to help you understand why an argument works, how to recognise weaknesses in your own writing, and how to make more independent decisions as a reader and writer.
I also understand that academic writing can feel overwhelming, especially when you have interesting ideas but are unsure how to organise them into a clear argument. I can help you break that process into manageable steps and develop strategies that you can continue to use independently in future work.

I first became involved in teaching and tutoring when I was 16, volunteering with a non-profit organisation in Shanghai. I taught English to children from migrant worker families and also took part in adult education programmes.
During my PhD, I received formal teaching training and worked as a tutor for undergraduate English Literature discussion classes. I guided students in reading, discussing, and analysing literary texts, while helping them develop their own interpretations and express their ideas with greater confidence and clarity.
These experiences have shaped the way I teach today. I pay close attention to how each student reads, thinks, and communicates, where they may need more support, and what genuinely interests them. I then adapt the pace, materials, and activities to help them become stronger readers, writers, and independent thinkers.
I am particularly interested in helping students read more confidently and systematically. Rather than teaching you to work against your instincts, I want to help you understand and refine them. Often, you may already sense that a passage is interesting, unusual, moving, or important before you can fully explain why. We can begin with that instinct and then look more closely at the language, structure, imagery, form, and context that create that response.
My aim is to make close reading and literary analysis feel more natural and manageable. Interpretation is not about finding one “correct” answer, but about developing an idea, supporting it with evidence, and expressing it persuasively.
I can also support students with essay writing, thesis development, argument structure, paragraph organisation, use of evidence, academic style, and editing. My goal is not simply to improve one assignment, but to help you understand how strong academic writing works so that you can become a more independent and confident writer.
I also have professional experience as a researcher and editor at CCTV International and National Geographic China, where I worked with both English- and Chinese-language materials across different platforms. This experience strengthened my sensitivity to vocabulary, tone, context, and natural expression, as well as my ability to communicate ideas clearly for different audiences.
For Mandarin-speaking students, I can also explain difficult literary, theoretical, or academic concepts in Mandarin when helpful, while supporting you in developing stronger academic English.
For me, teaching is about more than passing on knowledge. It is about exploring ideas, asking questions, and learning through discussion. I want to create a relaxed and respectful environment where reading and writing feel less like a chore and more like a way of thinking, discovering, and expressing ideas.

She is skilled in helping you explore ideas and analyses in a supported and encouraging manner. She has really helped me develop my ability to think and communicate about literature, particularly in the more difficult aspects for me such as contextual study, but also on the core principles like close reading - thank you for encouraging my interests and abilities in literature!
I’ve known Fan since university. She studied in the US and the UK for over ten years, so she is very fluent in English. She also holds a PhD in English Literature, which means she has not only an excellent command of the language but also a deep understanding of its cultural and literary aspects. I would highly recommend her classes. I always find that talking to her helps me reflect on my own life and studies, and I’m sure her thoughtful and insightful approach would benefit anyone learning with her.
