About Reiss
Hello! My name is Dr. Reiss. I grew up in the NWT and I have spent the last 12+ years teaching in various capacities grades 8-12 and university courses. I am a good teacher because I not only know what I'm talking about, but am excited about it! I've spent a good chunk of my career passing on that enthusiasm to my students, and have seen many students start a course with a blank, confused, or uncaring face, and leave with a shared excitement for, and understanding of, the course subject matter. I've helped a range of students finish courses with good marks, solid understandings, and enthusiasm: students with no background in a subject matter, students for whom English is not their first language, and students of all different ages and cultures. I hope to be able to help you, too!

Hi, my name is Dr. Reiss! My enthusiasm for various subject matters comes across in my combination of explanatory lecture and one-on-one dialogue with my students. I can both aid students in grasping course material and supplement their overall education, preparing them for wider opportunities at undergraduate and graduate levels. I have experience teaching from grades 8-12 as well as undergraduate and graduate levels. I can teach 1-on-1 as well as to groups of students. I will discuss with my students their needs - whether it is a specific area or an entire course or discipline - and form lesson plans around their needs. Typically such lesson plans would combine a partial lecture on the subject matter with a period of open discussion and dialogue with the students to provide space for them to engage as well as clarify any misunderstandings. This also allows me to judge the level of comprehension my students are currently at. My engaged lecturing style is flexible enough to be interrupted by questions whenever a student is confused, and also provides students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with university settings without being overwhelmed by 'just being a number.' Given that the student is likely already loaded up with homework, I will not assign homework per se, but will sometimes make recommendations of activities to test their skills in a subject area and discuss it with them during our next session as a means to strengthening student comprehension of, as well as application of, subject material. My ability to give real-world examples as I connect my students to the subject matter makes especially difficult theoretical areas of understanding accessible, and has proven over my 10+ years of teaching experience. Regardless of subject matter, my students develop notable improvements in reading comprehension, writing, argumentation, and citation.

If a student requires tutoring around course concepts, historical periods, or help working on academic writing - these are all things I can provide with my own experience and materials. If a student requires tutoring over an extended period for the sake of a particular course and its subject matter, I will charge additionally the price of whatever textbook(s) are required for that course if I do not already have them. If the student is willing, they can purchase a second hand version at their university bookstore and I will accept that instead to help save them money. If the student requires a space for tutoring outside their home and in-person, I will charge additionally whatever rate is needed if booking a space is required.
