About Thomas
Struggling with maths, or preparing for an exam? You are in the right place.
Like yourself, my interests started at a young age. Subjects like mathematics and physics came to light early. For example, I started watching Discovery Channel the moment I could read the Dutch subtitles and never went back to Nickelodeon.
Fast forward, I am 26 and graduated with my bachelor's degree in Applied Physics at The Hague University. Mathematics is the language of physics, so I have used it daily for years. From calculus during my degree to statistics in my machine learning projects. During my studies, I was tutoring in my hometown Haarlem for middle school and college students, helping them prepare for their exams in mathematics and physics.
Now, I've been teaching karate to kids in the meantime, so I know how to keep young students engaged and motivated. After all, I have a black belt and I love seeing them grow in terms of age and skill. I also started practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to not just keep teaching but also be taught.

I used to struggle with mathematics. Not because I didn't have the learning capability, but because no teacher answered the why question. Why should I learn this, what is this useful for? After all, what's the reason to learn something if you cannot apply it?
For mathematics, the why matters most. Percentages become interest rates, statistics becomes sports data, and calculus becomes speed and acceleration. During my classes, I emphasize the application and motivate students why the subject is important to know, resulting in improved memory and understanding. Once a subject truly clicks, you will understand it for a long time.
To verify your understanding, I'll ask a platter of questions and bring multiple scenarios. You do the thinking like you would during an exam, while I break the problem down into smaller bits. I help with homework, test weeks, and final exam preparation for middle school and college students.
A class starts beforehand: you tell me what you would like to discuss, preferably with some images of your coursework, so I can prepare a well-thought-out program. Lessons take place online with screen sharing and a digital whiteboard. The lesson plan looks like:

* Presenting the goal of the class
* Explaining the new subject matter
* Exercising with varying scenarios
* Summary

During first year in university, I had algebra and calculus for my financial engineering degree. I quickly hit a brick wall during study and I couldn't pass it. I heard of Thomas from other friends and for a good reason. He told me my fundamentals with mathematics ware incomplete and helped me fill the gaps. Fast forward, the subjects don't give me anxiety anymore and actually started liking them! I surely vouch him as a tutor.
Thomas helped me during high school with mathematics and physics, which were never my favourite subjects. Luckily, his instructions and context really boiled things down. No unnecessary information, only what's required.
