About Tom

Hi there!

I have recently finished my PhD in materials science at the University of Warwick and am awaiting my graduation. I am now moving into the world of tutoring after having some great experiences working with the Brilliant club - a wonderful charity that sends PhD students and graduates out to teach at secondary schools with low university progression rates.

I always love learning about science and the universe, and I love to educate others on all the weird and wonderful aspects of science in our world. However, I often found when I was a secondary school student myself that teachers and schools managed to make the science syllabus quite dull, which is a tragedy! Much of the content in the syllabus touches on some truly fascinating stuff - I think it just needs the teacher to provide good context for what the science means and how it is applied. This is the ethos I bring to my teaching. A good analogy always makes the science easier to remember and understand! If we're learning about mechanics, why not apply it to the way the planets orbit the sun?

I acheived 6 As and 4 A*s at GCSE, including A*s in all sciences and maths, and an A*-A-A at A-level in maths, physics and chemistry respectively. I also have a bachelor's and master's degree in physics, and my PhD straddles the fields of both Physics and Chemistry, so I am confident teaching either of these subjects -along with maths - at secondary school level, as well as Physics at degree level.

Most importantly, if you select me as a tutor, I will focus on setting up a dialogue with the student so I can figure out the best way to approach tackling their struggles with the content. I will use this conversation to create case studies and examples to help the student see the science from a new perspective, which will help them to break through and truly understand the content.

Of course, the key to succeeding at secondary school science and maths is being able to tackle the problems on the exam papers. Hence, I will prepare new example questions based on the kind of problems they will face on exam papers, and help them develop methods to approach these kinds of problems. I will then provide feeback and advice on how to better approach exam questions, which will be key to their success in acheiving high grades.

In the case of degree level Physics, I will be able to provide more advanced examples from my research experience, which will help them reach a deeper understanding of the science - an invaluable asset when studying at this level.
