About Brenda

Literature pulled me toward Spanish long before grammar ever did, mostly through poetry discovered during comparative literature studies years ago. That early love for language as art shaped how I've approached teaching Spanish ever since, favoring expression alongside accuracy. Formal training deepened technical understanding, but the original spark stayed rooted firmly in creative appreciation. That blend still defines how I introduce grammar without ever letting it feel dry or disconnected from real meaning.

Working with creative writers alongside curious hobbyists means treating every lesson as an opportunity for genuine expression, not just correction. I never reduce language purely to rules, since real fluency eventually depends on comfort with nuance and tone as well. What I find most rewarding is watching a hobbyist proudly share a short piece of writing they created entirely in Spanish. That personal ownership over language often means more than flawless grammar ever could.

I stay closely engaged with Spanish literature and music, regularly reading and listening purely for personal enjoyment. This keeps my teaching genuinely inspired and connected to language as something living, not static. Lessons often lean toward whatever creative form excites a student most, whether poetry, lyrics or personal writing. My hope remains constant, that students leave feeling genuinely expressive, not just technically accurate, in Spanish.

About the lesson

Creative writers approaching Spanish often want more than survival phrases, so lessons lean toward expressive vocabulary and sentence structure from fairly early on. Curious hobbyists, learning simply out of genuine interest, share a similar appetite for language that feels rich rather than purely functional. Short poems and song lyrics enter lessons early, giving both groups something evocative to analyze alongside standard grammar practice. Rhythm and word choice get discussed openly, treating language as something worth appreciating, not just memorizing correctly.

As comfort grows, students begin writing short creative pieces themselves, applying new grammar within something personally meaningful rather than generic exercises. Creative writers particularly enjoy exploring how word order and tone shift meaning subtly across different Spanish texts. Hobbyists instead often gravitate toward simpler creative prompts, journaling or short reflective writing that still stretches their growing vocabulary. I keep grammar correction gentle but consistent throughout, ensuring accuracy never gets sacrificed purely for creative expression.

I remind students regularly that expressive language still needs solid grammatical footing underneath it to communicate clearly. Reading widely, even simple texts, builds vocabulary faster than isolated memorization ever manages alone. Topics stay closely tied to genuine creative interest, whether poetry, lyrics or personal writing. My focus throughout remains steady, helping students find real voice, not just correctness, in Spanish.
