About Loz
I’m a professional musician, bandleader and educator with extensive experience both performing and directing ensembles. I currently manage and direct a professional big band, which has given me a strong understanding of how music works in real rehearsal and performance settings.
Alongside this, I’ve composed and arranged for a range of ensembles, including big band, brass band, orchestra, and funk/jazz groups. This practical experience shapes how I teach—I focus not just on theory, but on how music actually sounds, functions, and comes together in performance.
I enjoy working with students who want to go beyond the basics, whether that’s developing their understanding of theory, learning how to write effectively for ensembles, or building their own compositional voice.

ABRSM Music Theory (Grades 1–8)
Structured support for students preparing for ABRSM exams. I break down theory into clear, manageable steps, helping students build confidence and understanding ahead of exams. Lessons can also be tailored to address specific theory gaps, whether for coursework, performance, or general interest.
Arranging for Large Ensemble
For students interested in writing for orchestra, brass band or big band. We’ll cover:
Instrumentation and scoring:
- Writing effectively for different sections
- Balance, texture and voicing
- Practical techniques used in real ensembles
This is ideal for students, composers, or musicians looking to develop their arranging skills in a practical way.
Composition (All Styles)
- Developing musical ideas
- Structure and form
- Harmony and melody writing
- Notation and presentation
I tailor this to your interests, whether you’re composing for exams, coursework, or personal projects.
Lessons are practical, focused and adaptable, depending on your goals. I aim to make sessions engaging while building clear skills and understanding over time.

Loz has been my mentor in music for both learning how to direct a band, how to perform with a big band and especially helped me pursue further development of my arranging skills.
I've worked with Loz both professionally and under his mentorship across 3 years.
He has always been knowledgeable, supportive and passionate about finding a way that each individual person can learn whichever skillset they put their mind to.
Loz is a very respected musician in the 'scene'. He's known for being a great community leader with a great positive energy that infects all those around him.
If you are considering working with Loz, I couldn't imagine someone more trustworthy to invest your time with.
I am a better person and musician because of his mentorship.I have worked with Loz and would highly recommend him for tuition! *****
