About Thorfinn
My studies in mathematics and physics have been motivated purely by an interest in the workings of our universe. By the hand of curiosity I was led down the rabbit hole to find a core of theoretical physics and its inseparable sister, mathematics. In secondary school I enjoyed these two subjects and received high grades, but there was so much left unsaid. I yearned for a deeper understanding. So, with an elementary bindle over my back, I dived into a self-educated adventure in physical theory; unveiling, detangling and analysing the components of the universe. My studies have been based on the Feynman Lectures on Physics and Euclid's Elements of Geometry, the building blocks from which pure mathematics, probability theory, calculus, trigonometry and complex numbers quickly emerged. Throughout my explorations I have constantly strived for a deep and comprehensive understanding of nature's invisible hand. In my continuing journey through this fascinating world, my mind is propelled by inquisition and greased by the knowledge of experts.

What is a reflection? What is fire? Why does light travel in sine waves? What even are sine waves? In order to fully answer these questions we must begin with first principles and build up from there. If we do this, the picture becomes addictively fascinating. With a bit of thought, we would discover that fire is really a release of trapped sunlight and that the sine function is nothing more than the hand of a clock spinning around its face. With a little further thought we would understand that our reflection actually exists everywhere on a mirror. We see ourselves in one place because that is the only place where our reflection is not cancelled out. Reasoning from first principles has numerous benefits. It builds a true conceptual framework of ideas; allows you to tackle unusual problems; encourages you to review and question axiomatic assumptions; stimulates the imagination; catalyses innovation; and satisfies the ever-present question 'but why?'. Through a first principled, imaginative and frankly exciting approach, I wish to impart my own enthusiasm and knowledge of physics and mathematics on to my students. I firmly believe that zestful interest and true understanding are the two fundamental ingredients for successful studies, so that is precisely what I deliver. My sessions are usually one hour long and cost £30. However, I am happy to modify the duration according to personal circumstance. I am willing to tutor anybody up to first year university level, in physics and up to secondary school level, in mathematics.
