About Olalekan

Hello, I'm Dr. Olalekan Balogun - an Assistant Professor and Acting Departmental Co-Chair in Geography and Environment at Trinity Western University, and someone who truly loves helping students succeed.

MY ACADEMIC JOURNEY
I earned my BSc in Geography at the University of Ibadan, then my MSc and PhD at York University in Toronto, where I held a York Doctoral Fellowship and passed my PhD comprehensive exam with distinction. I went on to postdoctoral research in Physics at the University of Toronto, modeling wildfire emissions with satellite data. I also completed a federal research contract with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS
I am the lead author of peer-reviewed papers on northern peatlands and climate change in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences (2024), Science of the Total Environment (2023) and Polar Science (2022), and a co-author in the Journal of Hydrology (2020). I have presented at the American Geophysical Union, ArcticNet and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, and I serve as a peer reviewer for Remote Sensing of Environment. I know first-hand what it takes to plan a project, analyze messy data, write it up, survive peer review and defend it - and I'm happy to share every lesson I learned along the way.

TEACHING AND MENTORING
I have taught and supported university students for more than ten years - as a teaching assistant, lab and field coordinator, course instructor and now professor - in courses from Physical Geography and Hydrosphere to Global Climate Change and Climatology of High Latitudes. I have mentored and supervised teaching assistants, trained undergraduates in research and statistical methods, and as an educational developer I trained over 100 university faculty and TAs in effective teaching.

WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT
I'm approachable, patient and genuinely kind. I value empathetic listening, open communication, a little humor, and a respectful, safe space where no question is too small. As founder of the Prince Casper Foundation, which supports education in underserved communities, I care deeply about opening doors for every student - whatever your background or starting point.

University can feel overwhelming - especially when you are facing your first research project, an honours thesis, a master's proposal or a difficult course on your own. My sessions are a calm, encouraging space where you get clear guidance from someone who has walked the whole path, from undergraduate to PhD, postdoc and professor.

HOW I CAN HELP
Academic mentorship and tutoring
- Understanding difficult course material, especially in geography, environmental science, earth systems, climate and the physical sciences
- Study strategies, time management and planning for exams and assignments
- Building confidence, motivation and a healthy relationship with your studies
- Graduate school planning: choosing a program and supervisor, applications, statements of intent and scholarships

Research mentorship and supervision
- Finding a research question and turning an idea into a workable project
- Literature reviews, research proposals and study design
- Data analysis with R, Python, Excel and GIS, plus statistics and interpreting results
- Scientific writing: structuring a thesis, chapter or journal manuscript, and responding to reviewer comments
- Preparing conference posters, presentations and thesis defences
- Ongoing check-ins to keep your thesis or capstone project on track

A TYPICAL SESSION
1. We start with where you are: your goals, deadlines and what is worrying you
2. We work through the problem together - a concept, a chapter draft, a dataset or a plan
3. You leave with clear, written next steps and constructive feedback
4. Between sessions I can review drafts so each meeting moves you forward

WHO IT IS FOR
Undergraduate students (including honours and capstone projects), master's and PhD students, and early-career researchers. Ideal if you are in geography, environmental science, climate or earth sciences, or any field that uses quantitative data analysis.

MY APPROACH
I believe every student deserves to be heard, supported and believed in. I listen first, explain clearly, and offer honest, kind feedback that helps you grow rather than feel judged. My goal is not to do the work for you, but to help you become a confident, independent thinker and researcher.
