About Sakura
Hello! My name is Sakura, and I’m a music education student at the University of Victoria currently working toward completing my teaching degree and certification. I’ve been teaching since I was 12, when I began assisting in my father’s music studio in Vancouver, where I gained experience working with students of all ages and levels.
Interestingly, my journey with music didn’t start with love—it started with pressure. Growing up, I struggled to enjoy music because I felt forced into it, and over time, that made me dislike it more and more until I eventually quit. It took time for me to reflect and change my mindset, but when I returned to music, I made a promise to myself to approach it differently—to enjoy the process, to be patient, and to use music as a way to express myself. That shift changed everything. I fell in love with the art form in a completely new way, and it ultimately inspired me to pursue music not just as a passion, but as a career.
Because of that experience, I deeply understand how challenging practicing can feel, especially for students who may feel frustrated or discouraged. My goal as a teacher is to help students discover their own connection to music, build confidence, and realize that it’s possible to enjoy something even when it’s difficult.
In addition to teaching, I enjoy producing music for pop singers behind the scenes and composing my own piano works, with the goal of one day having my pieces included in the RCM piano syllabus.

I am a dedicated music educator and current music education student at the University of Victoria, studying under Steinway Artist Arthur Rowe, and working toward my teaching degree and certification. I have been teaching since the age of 12, gaining early experience by assisting my father, David Yeung, in his established home music studio in Vancouver. Through this, I have worked with a wide range of students and contributed to a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, with many students achieving First Class Honors as well as Gold and Silver Medal distinctions.
My teaching approach is highly individualized. I design custom curricula tailored to each student’s learning style, goals, and needs, including those with disabilities or medical challenges. I believe that every student is capable of success with the right support, and I strive to create a learning environment that is both structured and encouraging.
I have extensive experience helping students achieve strong results in music theory and history. While I support students in preparing for exams, I also emphasize developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of music. My goal is to keep students motivated while helping them set realistic, measurable expectations and maintain balance with their academic studies and extracurricular commitments.
Above all, I aim to make music an enjoyable and meaningful experience. One of the most common reasons students discontinue lessons is frustration or lack of enjoyment. Because learning music requires patience and perseverance, I strive to teach in a way that supports both musical growth and personal development.
From September to April, I am based in Victoria while completing my studies at the University of Victoria. From May to August, I teach at my father’s home studio in Burnaby, conveniently located in Station Square, directly across from Metrotown SkyTrain Station. Students are welcome to attend lessons year-round, with the flexibility of studying with either my father or myself, depending on availability.
Our studio offers instruction in piano, violin, flute, guitar, music theory, harmony, and history, based on the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum.
If you are looking for a supportive, adaptable, and results-driven teacher who is committed to your growth, I would be happy to work with you!
