About Penny
I love all things biology! I can make sure you love it too!
I have a degree in Environmental Science. My university was situated near a degraded coastal alkaline wetland. For my final senior project I worked with a team to restore this wetland and in so doing learned everything about wetland chemistry, biology ecology, and species. I loved this experience so much I originally planned to become a scientist. But my first job after graduating was teaching, and I loved it so much I've been doing it ever since!

My specialty is in getting ANY STUDENT to not just understand, but LOVE biology. I have been teaching high school biology for ten years and no one leaves my class without a new appreciation and thorough understanding of the incredible life on this planet.
I have taught students with all types of learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, and school-related anxiety. I am able to customize my lessons to each student need and learning style so no assignment is boring or too difficult (which are common reasons for homework resistance). The key is to always connect the lessons with things the student is familiar with or is interested in. This way the student sees how everything can be connected with science!
A typical lesson begins with a conversation about what the student knows already about the subject of the lesson. For example, if the lesson is on energy, I'll usually ask "What is energy? Can you define it?" Even kids who say they don't know or remember anything actually know more than they think. From there we brainstorm or make a word cloud or concept map about any related terms, thoughts, or concepts that come to mind in relation to the subject. Soon we're filling up the board with things the student shouts out like "power" "electricity" "batteries" . This helps the student get comfortable with saying what they know, and realizing how much they know. This usually makes them more confident about making connections, which in turn helps them to learn!
I will then define the most pertinent vocabulary words. Usually just one, but no more than three so as to not overwhelm the student. For the energy example, "Energy is the ability to do work or cause change". From there we will list and discuss different types of energy- light, thermal, chemical, etc. using examples that the student is definitely familiar with.
