About Julian
During a forty-year career Julian has written and directed many different types of film from pop videos through industrial documentaries to fiction shorts, including live action and animation, but since his time as a Hollywood script doctor (e.g. for The Heist starring Pierce Brosnan) he has concentrated on writing feature and short film screenplays - about twenty in total. In the last 10 years Julian has written six full length screenplays and several shorts. Julian can help you write an intelligent, charming, witty and original screenplay from first principles based on what excites, interests and moves you - and most importantly, help you get it finished.

ThanksPerfect! I have learnt a lot already and look forward to formatting my concept and ideas for a comedy screenplay. His experience, knowledge and enthusiasm makes the lessons fun and enjoyable. Look forward to working with Julian to help achieve my goals
Perfect! I had the privilege of chatting online with Julian, and I can't express how grateful I am for the experience. I have wanted to write a screenplay for a long time but have, until now, found the prospect of learning theory and the craft of good writing a little daunting and, if I am honest, somewhat boring.
Julian is electric. He made me realize that theory is vital to success and can be interesting and fun if you have the right attitude, tools, and guidance. I have taken on board Julian's recommendations. I have ordered the books and am in the process of setting up the tools. The exciting thing is the fears I had about the process have dissipated, and I am actually excited at the prospect of starting again. Hallelujah!Perfect! Excellent subject knowledge and rapport with student. Obviously has a huge passion for his craft. My son thought the lesson was incredible!
- Bo (Rebecca's son) has both remarkable knowledge and passion for film. His evident love of language and wanting to understand the world and the stories we tell about it mean that he can use keen his intelligence to create fascinating and original film scripts. It is very enjoyable to teach Bo, not least because he seems genuinely thrilled to learn.Julian's response :

- Omowunmi is an interested and interesting student whom I enjoy teaching. She has a good range of focused story ideas, mostly inspired by real life, which give her the chance of original and strong dramatic outcomes. I hope to help her build her vision into exciting and compelling screenplays.Julian's response :
Perfect! Julian, gives you the opportunity to unfold your personality freely. His calm nature coupled with his deep theoretical and practical expertise in script writing, make him a valuable compass on your personal journey into the world of script writing. In addition, Julian creates a working atmosphere through his professional manner, where beginners and advanced students will feel at home. I am extremely grateful for the time he invests in me and I am looking forward to continue our cooperation together.
- (Rene) Eric is a keen and attentive student who clearly has a strong desire to learn about storytelling and is open to exploring different processes to make the art and craft both more effective and more exciting. Eric has lots of intriguing and unusual interests, including a strong liking for history, which we are exploring and which have the potential to make an unique and compelling story. Teaching a student as enthusiastic as Eric is both rewarding and enjoyable for both of us.Julian's response :

I have been fortunate to know and collaborate with Julian over many years in the film industry. He is an extremely talented and experienced producer and director across many genres, but it is his skill as a screenwriter that I think is exceptional. His scripts are engaging, inventive and original, often funny, with brilliant characterisation and masterly plotting.
As a tutor he can offer not only his own expertise, but an encyclopaedic knowledge of film, an analytical eye and an ability to provide a discerning and helpful overview. He understands the mechanics of scriptwriting, and can interpret the theory to his students in an intelligible way, as well as offering practical advice to resolve issues in an existing script.
I highly recommend Julian.Julian Darley is a wonderful tutor. He is clear in his instruction and analysis and sets out a simple and flexible structure to help develop ideas and techniques. He cuts through all the complicated theory from books and helps with the practicality of getting ideas down on paper. He carefully followed the story idea I was interested in, helped me develop and structure it, then helped me get the script finished. That was an amazing feeling!
Julian Darley has been of tremendous help to me in explaining the incremental steps involved in the development of a screenplay. He has a deep understanding of the entire process and has allowed me to create a screenplay of my own. Julian not only understands all the steps involved but can explain them with clarity and depth. Without Julian's help I don't believe that my screenplay would be have been as professional and well received and I now possess a much deeper understanding of the activity of screenwriting as a whole. In addition, he provided very useful direction in terms of finding inspiration from other seasoned screenwriters and identified good examples of well-written literature appropriate to my task. Thank you Julian! - Alex McCracken
