About TAKESHI
I'm a third-year student at Sophia University, currently studying in Montreal as an exchange student at McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management. Alongside my studies, I teach Japanese on campus, which has given me hands-on, day-to-day insight into where students tend to struggle and what teaching approaches actually work.
I grew up living abroad with my family, moving between Japan and Thailand and navigating the language and cultural shifts that came with it — an experience that gave me genuine empathy for the difficulty of learning something new. I'm a fluent, native-level Japanese speaker, and I bring practical teaching experience to match: alongside my current role at McGill, I previously worked part-time teaching Japanese to young students back in Japan.
Drawing on this multicultural background and hands-on teaching experience, my lessons go beyond language mechanics to build real, usable understanding — combining the precision of a native speaker with the perspective of someone who has taught learners of all ages.

Course Overview
This course focuses on live, practical Japanese — not textbook Japanese, but the kind of language you can actually use in real conversations. Using a communication-based approach, lessons prioritize natural expression over rote grammar memorization, so you leave each session able to actually use what you learned, not just recognize it.
What I Teach
Pronunciation — Building correct intonation and rhythm through hands-on practice, not just repetition
Reading — Using manga as reading material alongside level-appropriate texts, so you build reading fluency through content that's actually engaging — not textbook filler
Listening — Training your ear for natural-speed conversation, the kind you'll actually encounter outside a classroom
Typical Lesson Structure
Each lesson opens with a warm-up conversation, introduces new expressions in context, uses manga to explore reading and vocabulary in a natural setting, moves into role-play or simulation-based practice, and closes with a quick reflection — so you finish every session knowing exactly what you can now say that you couldn't before.
What Makes Me Different
I'm a Sophia University student currently on exchange at McGill's Desautels Faculty of Management, where I also teach Japanese on campus — so I have real, current insight into where learners actually get stuck. My time living in Thailand also gave me a genuinely cross-cultural lens, meaning I teach language alongside the cultural context that makes it click.
