About Katelyn
Welcome! My name is Katelyn Smith, and I am a Trent University Graduate. I finished my B.A. Honours English Literature & Minor in Cultural Studies this past Spring, and will soon be pursuing my Masters in the Fine Arts in Creative Writing. During my tenure at Trent University, I received yearly scholarships and the distinction of Dean's List for my work in English Literature, graduating with a 4.0 GPA & on the President's List. Upon graduating, I was nominated for the Wernick Prize in Best Discourse, and encouraged by several of my Professors to pursue a career in Education. I am a lover of literature, having written poetry & prose recreationally, and am only happy with a book under my arm. I guarantee to help you find your own passion for English Literature, whether it be the euphoria that comes with that first passing essay grade, or discovering a love for Chaucer. Most importantly, I'm a student just like you, and understand the patience and practice necessary to improve a skill - lets avoid the anxiety of working with a 'superior' and work together!

I am a big believer in learning through making mistakes. In our lessons, we will work together to find a hands-on approach that works for the student, in which the student will practice the desired English / Literacy skills until they feel comfortable with the knowledge. This differs from traditional 'classroom' teaching styles, in which those who fall behind the expected level of knowledge are unable to gather adequate one-on-one time with the teacher to improve. Working together, we will ascertain the skills the student wishes to improve, and make a plan within a desired time frame (including 'solo' homework time) so that the student is able to experience self-directed learning. Self-directed tutoring will allow the student to become comfortable breaking down the material into manageable pieces, and encourage them to take charge of their education through time-management. I have worked with students from Elementary school to University levels, and look forward to working with you!
