About Joanna
Hello! I am a final year PhD student in Mathematics at the London School of Economics. Prior to that I completed my BA in Physics (Triple First Class) and the MMath Masters in Mathematics, both at Cambridge University. I finished my high school education in a public school in West London, obtaining 9 A* + Distinction for my GCSE’s, and full marks in all exams at AS and A2 Level (4 A* at A2 + A at AS). I have always been curious about all STEM subjects! Since I was little collecting pond water to look at under a microscope back home, to now teaching various undergraduate mathematics courses alongside my PhD in graph theory… I love sharing this enthusiasm with others, and helping students to achieve their academic goals! During my Masters and throughout COVID, I tutored A Level and GCSE Mathematics and Physics online via an iPad, including delivering a comprehensive A Level Mathematics revision course. Since beginning my PhD I have focused on teaching undergraduate classes, and am looking to pursue a career in academic teaching! Outside of mathematics and teaching, I enjoy all aspects of fitness- running, weight training and gymnastics. :) I also have an interest in learning adaptations for students with neurodiversity and special needs (but won’t be pursuing any official teaching qualifications until after my PhD).

I am a passionate and enthusiastic tutor, with experience teaching science subjects up to GCSE, and Mathematics up to undergraduate Level. As well as tutoring high school students, in person and online, I have taught mathematics courses for undergraduates continuously for the past four years, receiving several teaching quality awards for my high ratings from students! Teaching and tutoring is one of my biggest passions! :) My tutoring philosophy centres on two core principles: 1. First, I work with the student to develop a thorough understanding of the material. I bring several approaches to understanding a concept to find the one that clicks best with a student’s unique thinking modality; we consolidate the student’s knowledge by working through plenty of questions, together and between sessions. 2. Secondly, I work on honing a students’ exam technique so they can demonstrate their understanding when it counts. STEM subject mark schemes obey a particular structure which makes it much easier to gain marks if followed. Understanding this was key to my own success in obtaining full marks in every exam at AS and A2 Level, and subsequently in obtaining a First Class grade in every year of my university studies at Cambridge. I am happy to tutor any science subject up to GCSE Level, and Mathematics at GCSE, A Level and undergraduate Level; including STEP/MAT entrance exams. I am available to tutor online and in person within central London, and am more than happy to tailor the session duration to what works best for the student! My preferred tutoring time is during the daytime of weekdays and any time on the weekends, which is especially suitable for home-schooled students seeking help with more than one subject.
