About Vera

I teach Classical Civilisation (OCR) at a GDST school in London, where I also run an after-school GCSE Classical Civilisation programme in partnership with local state schools. I have over 10 years of tutoring experience in London and Madrid. I’m a native Spanish and English speaker and fluent in French, and I like to show how the ancient world connects to the languages and stories we know today.

I graduated with First Class Honours in Classics and French from UCL, with the Otto Skutsch Prize and a place on the 2020 Dean’s List. My dissertation looked at Homer and Don Quixote as heroic journeys, and my MA research explored fairy tales and folklore. I also directed Aristophanes’ Frogs as the 2020 Classics play at the Bloomsbury Theatre, so I love seeing the ancient world come off the page.

About the lesson

My Classics lessons suit students from KS3 through to university. For GCSE, we work through the OCR specification, covering the topics and texts of your course, source analysis, and how to write clear, well-argued exam answers. For A level, we go deeper into the literature, culture and ideas, with a strong focus on essay structure and critical thinking. For university students, I can help with Classics essays and dissertations, from the first idea and research to planning and redrafting. I also love working with students on epic, Greek tragedy and comedy, myth, folklore and oral tradition, where I have the most to share. I’ll tell you honestly if a topic is beyond me, and we’ll prepare it together.

Lessons are structured and relaxed, with discussion, summarising, short oral presentations, creative projects and games, and I use digital resources like interactive quizzes and online texts and images to keep them fun and tailored to you.

I believe Classics comes alive when you can see why it still matters, so we connect what we study to myth, language, art and the stories we still tell.

Details

My lessons are £55 an hour online and £70 an hour in person. That covers more than the hour we spend together. Before the lessons, I put time into planning material around you, your goals and your course, so every lesson feels made for you. I also keep up with my subjects and any exam board changes, and I’m happy to look over your work before we meet, so we can use our time on the things that will help most.
