About Matilde

I'm an undergraduate student at University College London (UCL), currently completing the BA in Comparative Literature. I am fluent in Portuguese, which is my mother tongue, Spanish, as I lived in Spain for 7 years and completed my schooling in Spanish, and English. Through living in a city as diverse and multicultural as London is, I've been fortunate enough to meet a variety of people interested in learning one of these languages, and have been able to gain extensive experience in teaching them to both absolute beginners and advanced speakers as a result. I'm happy to focus on any area (oral/written expression and comprehension, grammar, vocab, etc) that you feel you need to work on, as well as to divide our time evenly between all of them. In the past I have helped my students prepare for the DELE Diploma, the official Spanish proficiency exam, in which they achieved top grades. I also have experience teaching Spanish and Portuguese from scratch, where I have seen my students progress at an amazing rate.

Elsewhere, if you are interested in learning English as a foreign language or are preparing to take one of the English proficiency examinations typically required by universities and employers, I can be of help as well. In addition to living in London and being in the process of completing a bachelor's degree at a UK university, throughout the years I have taken the TOEFL, IELTS Academic, and Cambridge English (FCE, CAE, CPE) tests, all of which I achieved a top score in. I am therefore familiar with the format and expectations attached to each of these examinations, and would love to share useful tips and preparation resources with my students.

In addition to these languages I also speak French at an intermediate to advanced level (achieved a level of C1 on the TCF - Test de connaissance du français), and Danish, in which I am currently at an intermediate level (B1). I would be happy to tutor any French and Danish learners up to a GCSE/ intermediate level, and have accumulated a huge range of learning material for both languages that I would of course make available to my students (several textbooks that I would scan, practice sheets, vocabulary learning techniques, my favourite online resources, etc).

I would also love to offer Personal Statement and UCAS applications support to any UK, EU, and International students preparing to apply to UK universities in the future. I have my own personal experience applying for a humanities degree at UCL as an EU student, but have also supported other students in applying for degrees in different areas such as Economics or Business Management. Most recently, I helped one of my students write and edit their Personal Statement, and was glad to hear she got offers from all 5 universities she applied to to study Economics, including top unis like King's College London.

Lastly, please feel free to message me with any questions! Time-wise I'm really flexible, so I could adapt my schedule to fit classes at whatever time is most convenient to you. I'm happy to arrange a meeting over Zoom, Skype, etc... to discuss our potential classes! Looking forward to meeting you!

Regarding my teaching method, my main goal is ultimately to make our classes engaging, fun, and productive, and I think a central factor in achieving this is that they constitute a safe and non-judgemental environment to learn in. I've experienced first-hand how challenging it can be to learn a new language, or to recognise and acknowledge the achievements that make you the right fit for your degree of choice. These efforts require that we step out of our comfort zone, and thus I'm dedicated to making sure my students don't feel self-conscious of making mistakes or asking any questions. In short, I believe there are no "stupid" questions; you can only progress if these are answered. In fact, in the case of languages, any questions you may have are ones that I've most likely also had in the past- the only language I didn't have to make an active effort to learn was my mother tongue, Portuguese.

Secondly, I think it's useful not only to tailor the classes to each student's specific needs and objectives, but also to their schedules and availability. You might want to focus solely on conversation or pronunciation because you feel that is the last area you need to improve in to become fluent, or you might be preparing for a language test and are on a tight schedule. You might also have just decided to learn a new language because it's fun, or you'd like to live in a country where it is spoken. Whatever it is, it will determine the way we structure and run the class, so that I am delivering the particular content that you want to cover. It's also really important for me that students know they can give me feedback at any point (or I will ask for it!), so that I do my job well and help you achieve your goals. I will never take offence to it: I've been the student before and want you to get your money's worth!

Lastly, regarding homework and tasks, I believe in adjusting these to each student's availability: everyone has different schedules, commitments, and levels of activity, and I believe one can always learn or improve their skills in a language, no matter how little time they can allocate to studying it outside of class. The amount of time you have to dedicate to your studies might determine how fast you progress, but there is nothing wrong with learning at your own pace: I believe one learns more from being assigned a realistic amount of homework that fits within their schedule, than from being overwhelmed by their workload and losing motivation.
