Bradley Gilbert When I first started teaching in January of 1990, I wrote my name in yellow chalk on a green board. The students sat at individual desks so heavy, it took two of them to move one. We used a mimeograph to make copies, and typed handouts or wrote them by hand. Damp papers, purple ink, a grade book kept by hand. Now, sitting here typing on a tablet that predicts my next word, so much in education has changed dramatically, and yet, the simple act of learning has not. The presentation, synthesis, comparison, contrast, category, connections, are still the same. Facilitating that transition from concept to observable skill and content to commentary has been my vocation for nearly thirty-five years. From high school to middle school to elementary, my career path led me to places where I could be more creative, make more of those connections. Project Based Learning fit my skill set as did integrated skill development. I was doing “STEM” before it had an acronym. I spent the majority of my career in upper elementary developing these skills. All along the way, I helped individual students with writing and math, I became an ACT, SAT, SSAT, ISEE, ERB, tutor. I did some panel work with Educational Records and figured out some effective strategies for standardized tests. Always dabbling in my own writing, helping students with admissions essays became another way I could help them achieve goals and gain independence and confidence with their studies. At a certain point I longed for a new challenge and left the classroom to start my own business, my shop. The Grammar Shop and More… my one man, Swiss Army knife of an academic support shop. I worked long hours, and learned even more about how everyone learns in a slightly different way. As an educator, I recognize how small details, like pencil grip, can impact learning. I understand how to help students overcome challenges not by bulldozing them, rather by helping them use their strengths to tackle their stretches. I know that students who struggle, need both academic support and social and emotional bolstering. Now, as I approach the last chapters of my own story I have a particular set of skills and a great deal of experience and wisdom to share. I’m looking for a chance to put my talents and abilities to work. I have tired of the business side, and simply want to work for someone who can put me with people who need me. Thank you for your consideration.
