About Juan
I am a realist, so I am not going to make dubious claims that you will be conversational in Spanish in just weeks. Learning Spanish or any other language takes years of practice and dedication. My goal as your tutor is to supplement the instruction you receive in the classroom, emphasizing high-frequency vocabulary and giving you pointers your teacher might not give you, as well as help you avoid common pitfalls. As I get to know you better, I will adjust my tutoring to meet your specific needs. My linguistics training gives me a perspective many other native speakers do not have, as I have been taught explicitly what most native speakers know only tacitly, and may have difficulties articulating to someone who does not already speak the language.

What sets me apart is that in addition to being a native speaker and having a BA in Spanish, I also have a BA in Linguistics. This uniquely equips me to help you achieve the most native-like pronunciation possible thanks to my extensive training in phonetics. I also specialize in syntax, which enables me to help you better understand the aspects of Spanish grammar that non-native speakers find challenging, such as the subjunctive, the ser/estar distinction, and reflexive verbs. I can tailor sessions to meet your needs. The bulk of my experience tutoring has been with older children and adults (middle school through university undergraduate level). I can also tailor vocabulary lessons to meet your needs, such as for business, medical, etc.
