About Josh

As a professional musician and educator with 20 years of experience, I bring both deep musical knowledge and a thoughtful, supportive teaching approach to every lesson. My goal is not only to help students improve, but to help them feel confident, capable, and excited about learning music. I understand that every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to the individual’s age, level, goals, and learning style.

My background as a working musician allows me to bring real-world experience into the learning process, while my experience as an educator helps me present ideas in a clear, engaging, and encouraging way. I believe strong teaching should be both structured and enjoyable. Students need to feel challenged enough to grow, but supported enough to succeed.

In my lessons, I focus on building a strong foundation through fun, purposeful activities that develop rhythm, listening, coordination, creativity, and musical understanding. Whether a student is a complete beginner or already has some experience, I work to make each session productive, positive, and age-appropriate. I want students and families to feel that they are receiving high-quality instruction from someone who is knowledgeable, reliable, and genuinely invested in their progress.

What sets me apart is the combination of professional experience, educational skill, and personal care I bring to my work. I take teaching seriously, I communicate clearly, and I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable, motivated, and proud of their growth. My aim is to make music learning both meaningful and enjoyable, while giving students skills and confidence that last far beyond a single lesson.

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is centered on making music feel exciting, approachable, and deeply rewarding. I combine the perspective of a professional working musician with the care and structure of an experienced educator, so students are not just staying busy, but truly learning in a way that sticks. I focus on helping each student build confidence, curiosity, and real musical understanding through activities that are both fun and purposeful.

My teaching method blends creativity, structure, and adaptability. I use games, guided listening, movement, rhythm exercises, singing, instrument exploration, and age-appropriate music concepts to keep students engaged while developing core skills. I believe students learn best when they are actively involved, so I design lessons that invite participation, discovery, and repetition without feeling repetitive. I also adjust my teaching to the student’s age, personality, pace, and goals so lessons feel supportive and personal.

A typical lesson might include a warm-up activity, rhythm or listening games, singing or movement, hands-on music making, and a focused skill-building activity tied to a larger musical concept. For younger children, lessons often feel play-based while still building foundations like steady beat, pitch matching, coordination, listening, creativity, and musical confidence. For older beginners, I can also introduce more structured instrumental or theory-based learning in a way that stays engaging and clear.

What sets me apart is that I bring both real-world musical experience and a strong educational approach. As a professional musician and educator with many years of experience, I know how to make music meaningful, joyful, and accessible. I do not just teach isolated activities. I help students make connections, understand what they are doing, and develop skills that grow over time. My goal is to create an environment where students feel encouraged, capable, and inspired.

These lessons are ideal for young children, early learners, beginners, and families looking for enriching musical activities that are both educational and fun. They can support general music development, early childhood learning, beginner instrumental foundations, or simply a child’s love of music and creative expression.

I’ve never had a more experienced and thoughtful instructor! I’ve been a student of his for many years, on and off but more or less continuously.
Something really important to note is his flexibility in teaching—whether you need advanced concepts like music theory and improvisation, or just need the push to learn a few chords to strum around the campfire, he really has a skill of meeting students where they are.
My studies with him have been expansive, and he’s great with my kids’ lessons too. Thank you Josh!!

Josh is prompt, fairly priced & SUCH A GOOD TEACHER. His videos are super easy to follow & he can break down any song or riff I ask him for in a way that makes sense to me. He always checks in to make sure I got what I needed. His turnaround is super fast, even when he’s on the road. I highly recommend him!

I’ve known Josh since 2014 and have learned so much about music from him over the years! It’s one thing to be an incredible musician, but it takes a whole other set of skills to be able to clearly communicate one’s understanding to others so they can actually carry that new knowledge forward. Josh is 100% both. Not exaggerating, he is the best musician I know (I’m a professional musician myself) and he also knows how to explain things in a way people will actually get. He is not a musical elitist and is so inclusive. He makes people feel comfortable to be vulnerable and look at ways they can improve. A musician at any level would benefit from spending some time with Josh. The world is fortunate to have him as a player and an educator.
