About Buddhika

I’m Buddhika, a Physics Teaching Assistant and PhD student at the University of Manitoba. I help Winnipeg high-school and first-year university students understand physics, improve their problem-solving skills, and prepare for tests and exams.

I have tutored since 2017. My experience includes university teaching and tutoring with Tutor Doctor and Sylvan Learning in Winnipeg.

My research contributes to the MOLLER experiment at Jefferson Lab in the United States. I work with magnetic-field measurements, computer simulations, and experimental data analysis. This gives me practical examples of how classroom physics becomes a tool for understanding and measuring the real world.

Teaching has shown me that students can struggle with physics for very different reasons. One may need a clearer explanation of forces, another may struggle with algebra, and another may understand the topic but not know how to begin a question. I identify where the difficulty starts and build from there.

Students are welcome to ask basic questions, make mistakes, and request another explanation. My goal is to help them develop the understanding and confidence to solve problems independently.

WHAT WE CAN WORK ON

HOW I HELP STUDENTS SOLVE PROBLEMS

We practise how to:
• Identify what the question gives and what it asks
• Draw a useful diagram and choose directions
• Decide which physical principle applies
• Select and rearrange equations
• Work carefully with units and calculations
• Check whether the answer makes physical sense

If a difficulty comes from mathematics, we work on the relevant skill and then apply it to the physics question.

WHAT A LESSON LOOKS LIKE

We begin with the student’s current material and examples of questions they find difficult. I explain the relevant concept, demonstrate an example, and guide the student through practice.

The student then attempts questions with less help so I can check their understanding. We discuss mistakes and finish with clear priorities for further practice.

Students can bring class notes, assignments, review sheets, and previous tests. These help keep our work connected to their course and upcoming assessments.

TEST AND EXAM PREPARATION

We identify weaker topics, practise relevant problems, and work on clear explanations and organized solutions. Lessons can support students who are catching up, aiming for stronger grades, or preparing for university physics.

WINNIPEG AND ONLINE LESSONS

Lessons are available online and in person in Winnipeg, subject to location and availability. Please include your neighbourhood when requesting an in-person lesson.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

    My interest in mathematics and physics started when I was a student myself. I was always interested in understanding why something works rather than simply memorizing a formula or method. Over time, this interest led me to pursue physics academically, first through a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Physics, where I also studied Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics, and later through graduate studies in Physics at the University of Manitoba.

    Today, I am a graduate researcher in experimental physics. My research is connected with the MOLLER experiment at Jefferson Lab in the United States, a large-scale particle physics experiment involving precision measurements of electron scattering. My research work involves magnetic-field measurements, computer simulations, and experimental data analysis.

    Working in research has strengthened my appreciation for the mathematics and physics students encounter in high school. Concepts such as algebra, vectors, functions, trigonometry, electricity, and magnetism eventually become tools used to solve real scientific and engineering problems. This is one of the perspectives I try to bring into my tutoring.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

    What makes me passionate about mathematics and physics is the process of taking something that initially looks complicated and reducing it to a set of understandable ideas.

    In mathematics, I particularly enjoy algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus-related concepts, and problem solving because they teach students how to approach unfamiliar problems systematically. In physics, I enjoy showing students how mathematics can be used to describe real phenomena such as motion, forces, energy, electricity, and magnetism.

    My research also constantly reminds me of the connection between classroom mathematics and real science. The same ideas involving vectors, graphs, functions, coordinates, and mathematical modelling that students begin learning in high school are tools I use when analysing experimental data and computer simulations.
    Many students struggle because they try to memorize procedures without understanding why they work. I try to do the opposite. I want students to understand the reasoning well enough that, when the numbers or wording of a question change, they can still determine how to solve it.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

    I have more than six years of experience teaching mathematics and physics at different academic levels.
    Before coming to Canada, I taught Advanced Level Physics in Sri Lanka, including both national and EDEXCEL curricula. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in Physics at the University of Kelaniya, where I demonstrated undergraduate laboratory experiments and tutored subjects including Mathematical Physics and Biophysics.

    Since moving to Winnipeg, I have continued teaching at both school and university levels. I work as a Physics Teaching Assistant at the University of Manitoba, where my responsibilities have included laboratory demonstrations, tutorials, and assessment.

    I have also worked with Tutor Doctor and Sylvan Learning in Winnipeg, teaching Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics. My Canadian tutoring experience includes K–12, AP, and SAT students, as well as Manitoba high-school courses including Essential Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Pre-Calculus Mathematics, and Physics.

    This range of experience has taught me that two students can struggle with the same question for completely different reasons. One may have a weakness in algebra, another may misunderstand the concept, while another may know the material but lack an organized problem-solving method.

    I therefore do not use exactly the same teaching method with every student. I first identify where the difficulty begins and then build the student's understanding from that point. For Manitoba students, I also keep lessons closely connected to their school curriculum, current topics, assignments, tests, and examinations.
    My goal is not simply to provide answers. I want students to eventually become confident enough to solve problems independently.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

    I have had several teachers and university professors who influenced the way I approach teaching.
    The teachers who influenced me most were those who could take a difficult concept and explain it in a simple and logical way. Rather than beginning with equations that students were expected to memorize, they first helped us understand the physical or mathematical idea and then showed how the mathematics followed from it.

    That approach strongly influences my own teaching.
    I also admire physicists such as Richard Feynman because of his emphasis on genuine understanding and his ability to communicate difficult physics through relatively simple ideas.

    As both a researcher and a teacher, I have learned that knowing advanced mathematics or physics is not necessarily the same as being able to teach it effectively. A good teacher should understand a subject deeply enough to explain the same idea in several different ways until it makes sense to the student. This is something I continually try to improve in my own teaching.
  • What are your keys to success?

    For mathematics and physics, I believe success comes from four things: strong fundamentals, understanding rather than memorization, consistent practice, and learning from mistakes.

    The fundamentals matter enormously. For example, a Grade 12 Pre-Calculus student may struggle with an advanced-looking problem when the real difficulty is an earlier weakness in algebra, fractions, factoring, or manipulating equations. Similarly, a physics student may understand the physical concept but struggle because of difficulties with the mathematics.

    When I notice this, I prefer to address the underlying weakness rather than simply show the student how to complete one particular question.
    Students should also understand why a method works. Memorizing formulas may help temporarily, but understanding makes it much easier to deal with unfamiliar questions.

    Practice is equally important. Mathematics and physics are problem-solving subjects, and students improve by actually solving a variety of problems rather than only reading notes or watching someone else solve them.
    Finally, I encourage students to analyse their mistakes. When an answer is incorrect, I want to determine why: Was the concept misunderstood? Was there an algebraic error? Was the wrong formula selected? Was the question read too quickly? Identifying the cause helps prevent the same type of mistake from being repeated.
    My ultimate goal as a tutor is not simply to help a student finish today's homework or prepare for the next test. It is to develop their understanding, problem-solving ability, and confidence so that they can eventually approach difficult mathematics and physics problems independently.
