About Susan

I am an Adult ESL Teacher and IELTS Examiner and Coach with TESL Canada Level 2 certification, over twelve years of instruction experience with immigrant and refugee learners, as well as ESL students. I especially enjoy working with students so that they feel good about really using English, whether it is to settle in the community, to get involved in community life, or to prepare for work and more school. I am knowledgeable in Canadian Language Benchmarks and PBLA. I just received my certificates in CBL and PBLA, as well as ESL for All, and I am still learning and growing. I aim to create a friendly, caring and enjoyable classroom or learning environment. I think interactive experiences and technology make learning current and practical. I love to teach face-to-face, online or a combination of the two.

About My Teaching I am an Adult ESL Instructor and IELTS Preparation Tutor who specializes in helping learners build confidence, clarity, and real-world communication skills. My lessons are practical, interactive, and designed to help students use English in meaningful ways—from daily conversations to academic and professional settings. I use communicative, task-based teaching methods supported by the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA). This means lessons are structured, goal-focused, and always connected to real-life needs. For IELTS, I break the test into clear, understandable skills and teach simple, repeatable strategies that help students raise their band scores. What Lessons Look Like In my classes, you can expect: - Warm, supportive conversation practice - Step-by-step language building (vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation) - Reading and listening activities that develop strong comprehension strategies - Writing lessons with clear models and guided feedback - Real-life and IELTS-style speaking practice - Encouraging, personalized feedback after every lesson My lessons balance accuracy and confidence—we work on correct forms and feeling comfortable speaking. What Makes My Teaching Unique - I explain language in a simple, clear, and approachable way - I create a safe space where mistakes are part of learning - I tailor lessons to each student’s goals, pace, and learning style - I provide specific, actionable feedback, not vague comments - I make learning practical and relevant, not textbook-only Students often tell me they feel more confident, supported, and understood in my classes than in traditional classrooms. Who My Lessons Are For My teaching is well-suited for: - Newcomers to Canada developing English for daily life, community, and work - Adult learners who want to improve speaking, pronunciation, or writing - Students preparing for IELTS Academic or General exams - Professionals who need clearer communication at work - Learners who want a kind, patient, encouraging instructor Whether you are just starting your English journey or aiming for a specific IELTS band score, I will guide you step-by-step and help you grow with confidence.
