About Julie
Hi! I'm Julie. I've been writing and editing professionally since 2010. I like writing, and my clips include statehouse reporting, marketing for a YC-backed startup, a cover article for a real estate magazine, patient-focused pieces, and copy for an ad company. I've edited academic papers, theses, and journal articles across health communications, social sciences, and public policy. I am currently the copy editor for Watermark magazine for NPS's Center for Homeland Defense and Security.
Previously, I taught U.S. History to grades 5–12, including APUS (my favorite class!)—so I know how to break down a complicated assignment, meet students where they are, and teach the thinking behind good writing, not just the grammar rules.
My B.A. is in American Studies (U.S. history, English, and political science.) I hold an Editing Certificate from the University of Chicago and an ISO Plain Language Standard certification from the Plain Language Academy.
I'm currently completing certificates in Medical Writing & Editing (University of Chicago) and Plain Language (Simon Fraser University), and I am enrolled at Boston University for an M.S. in Health Communications.
I edit in AMA, AP, APA, and Chicago style. I'm a professional member of ACES, AMWA, EFA, and PLAIN. (I like learning, and I like teaching—if that was not obvious!)
One client has said, "Julie does an excellent job balancing the technical aspects of editing while helping to coach the writer to produce the best content. Her client-focused approach is incredibly effective particularly when I was working on projects with deadlines."
Another client has said, "Julie also has the ability to identify corrections and make suggestions where I was getting in my own way with my writing. She did all this while leaving my ego intact. I don’t believe that’s necessarily a common skill set or easy to do, but she made the editing experience fun."
I've helped grad students finish theses, professionals stop dreading deadlines, and high schoolers and college students realize they're better writers than they thought. You're next!

No one likes their writing changed, but everyone wants to be understood.
Think of me as your Virgil through the Hell of Writing Alone. I help students and professionals get their ideas across clearly—in their own voice, not mine.
I'm a plain language consultant, writer, and editor with credentials from the University of Chicago and the Plain Language Academy. I work with high schoolers on essays and applications, college and grad students on papers and theses, and professionals who need sharper writing at work.
Let's fix the draft and the dread. No red ink, no ego—just writing that works.
