About João

My name is João Menezes and I’m a guitar player from Portugal currently based in the UK. I've arrived in London in 2016, to study jazz at the acclaimed Guildhall School of Music & Drama (where I graduated) and since then I've been active in the music scene playing jazz and Brazilian music. Playing solo gigs, as well as band gigs with different groups and my own quintet. I’ve been teaching for the past 10 years (private as well as in groups) and since then I have been developing a teaching method that is easy to understand and learn. DBS checked.

About the lesson

Learning can be fun and serious at the same time, and I think that's the key for a good and enthusiastic lesson. In my experience every student is different, so the learning process and topics will be adjusted to the student needs, depending on what he/she wants to achieve with the instrument. The topics we would work on are: - Warm-up and Technique - Chords and scale knowledge - Improvising - Repertoire - Sight-reading - Music theory - Practice routines

Review

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of João.

Perfect! João is an excellent instructor. He is able to take what musical experience I already have and build upon that into expanding my theory knowledge and including the guitar in my repertoire. He has tailored my lessons in a way that I feel inspired to practice and have fun while doing it. I highly recommend João for lessons.

Perfect! An eye-opening first lesson with João! He's obviously a very skilled professional musician and an inspiring teacher. Looking forward to learning to play bossa nova (one of João's specialisms) properly!

I've been learning guitar with João for 1.5 years now and in that time I've made enormous progress.

He has a very high technical level and in-depth knowledge of music, however most important is his ability to communicate, which is very strong. He pitches his lessons to my ability, whilst always challenging me to become better.

His lessons cover technique, theory and learning songs I like, which he is able to learn by ear immediately.

From his teaching I can now play songs I never thought possible.

João is a great teacher - I highly recommend him!

I have lived in 3 capitals around Europe, and I've never met met anyone as versatile João. His outstanding knowledge of classical, jazz, and brazilian repertoire and theory, made me learn so much from him. You will notice from the first contact you'll have with him that he is an intense, open and positive person, and also honest and direct. It is 100% guaranteed that you will learn more and faster than you can imagine.
