About Fred
I'm Fred, and I've spent a long time now with a violin tucked under my chin. It's a strange and lovely place to make music from, when you think about it — the instrument rests right against you, close to your ear, so you hear it more intimately than anyone else in the room ever will. There's something quietly personal about that. People often call the violin the instrument closest to the human voice, and the longer I've played, the more I've felt the truth of it: at its best, it doesn't just play notes, it seems to speak.
I won't pretend the violin is the easiest place to begin — it's honest in a way some instruments aren't, and in the early days it tends to tell on you a little. But I've come to love that honesty, because it makes the slow blossoming of a real, singing tone all the more rewarding when it arrives. And it arrives for far more people than believe it will. I think of music not as a skill you conquer and then set down, but as a companion you keep for the whole of your life, and the violin has been exactly that for me — still surprising me, still teaching me things, even now.
So I teach the way I'd have wanted to be taught: patiently, without judgment, and at a pace that feels good rather than one that leaves you discouraged. I've sat with plenty of nervous beginners — people sure they'd started too late, or that the instrument was simply beyond them — and that fear almost never holds up once they're given a little time and a lot of encouragement. The ones who give up usually weren't short on ability; they were just rushed, or made to feel clumsy, or asked for beauty before they'd been allowed to find their footing. I'd rather make very sure none of that happens to you.
Whatever's drawn you to the violin — a lifelong longing to play it, a love of the sound, or simple curiosity about where it might lead — I'd be glad to walk part of that road alongside you.

I like to begin by understanding what you're actually after, because the right path looks completely different from one person to the next. Are you dreaming of playing particular pieces one day? Picking up the violin purely for your own enjoyment? Curious where it might take you, with no fixed destination in mind? There are no wrong answers — I just want to know where you're headed so the work we do leads somewhere you genuinely want to go.
From there we build slowly and carefully, because with the violin the early foundations matter enormously. We'll take real, unhurried time over the things that make everything else possible: a relaxed, comfortable hold that doesn't fight the instrument, a bow arm that moves freely, dependable tuning of the ear and the fingers, and the beginnings of a clean, warm tone. None of that is busywork — every bit of it is what eventually lets you play with ease and expression instead of tension. And we'll get there musically, not mechanically, so it never drifts away from the reason you picked the instrument up.
I try to be honest and gentle in equal measure. When something needs work, I'll tell you plainly — but kindly, and always with a clear, doable thing to focus on next rather than a vague "just keep practicing." Real progress on the violin isn't about huge bursts of effort anyway; it's about small, regular, encouraging steps that quietly add up, and a good deal of patience with the sounds you make along the way. Part of my role is to guide those steps, and part of it is simply keeping you feeling capable and motivated enough to keep taking them.
But mostly I want you to enjoy yourself, and I don't think that's a soft or secondary thing. The people who stay with an instrument for life are almost always the ones who found it genuinely rewarding along the way — and the violin, for all its early demands, has a way of repaying patience beautifully. So we'll keep the mood relaxed, celebrate each small victory as your tone and confidence grow, and move at a pace that lets you actually savor the journey. Wherever you're starting, and however far you decide to take it, I'd love to help you build a relationship with the violin that lasts.

Fred worked with me on trig identities, the unit where you're supposed to simplify one side to match the other but I'd just stare at it not knowing which identity to grab first. He'd cover up the answer key and make me say out loud what the expression reminded me of before writing anything down. I reached for Pythagorean identities when I needed double angle ones way too often. It took a few sessions to stop guessing randomly. He also walked through a quiz problem I'd left blank, no lecture about it, just straight to fixing the gap.
Fred helped me with my trig unit circle stuff, mostly converting between radians and degrees and figuring out reference angles, which I'd just memorize a chart for instead of understanding. He'd ask me to picture where on the circle I actually was before letting me touch a formula, and I froze up more than once. Took a bit to sink in. He also cleared up a confusing homework problem over email pretty quickly.
Fred tutored me through my SAT math prep, specifically the geometry questions that always seemed to hide the one detail I needed. My habit was jumping straight to formulas, and he kept redirecting me back to the diagram, asking what I actually knew for sure before writing anything down. Annoying at first, honestly. By my third
Fred helped me with algebra word problems, the kind where I could set up an equation fine but had no clue what to actually do with it once numbers got messy. Before we solved anything, he'd make me explain in plain words what the problem was even asking, and I'd usually get it half right at best. Slow going for a bit, but I stopped freezing up on multi-step problems. He also let me text a quick question before a quiz without making me wait until our next session.
Fred tutored me through chemistry stoichiometry, which I could technically do but never understood, just plugging numbers into whatever formula looked right. He started making me explain what the units meant before I touched a calculator, and I got it wrong constantly for the first couple weeks. Eventually the mole ratios stopped feeling like magic. He also let me push a session an hour later without turning it into a whole conversation about it.
Fred noticed that my ghost notes disappeared whenever I moved from the hi-hat to the ride. He slowed down the groove, marked exactly where my wrist was tightening, and gave me a two-minute accent exercise to use before practice. A week later I recorded the same section and the dynamics finally sounded controlled instead of flat.
Confused for weeks just to keep pace with my daughter's homework, then suddenly Fred had me explaining concepts back to her.
Kept tripping over the same spot in my new coding path, but he just calmly reworded it until it clicked.
After a draining shift I figured one trial with Fred couldn't hurt, then found myself booking four more before bed.
Halfway through a practice essay, Fred's outline trick just made my thesis statements make sense.
Between practice, homework, and family stuff eating my whole week, Fred just slotted in like it was nothing.
Between shifts and classes I kept blanking on the same problem, but Fred just calmly tried another angle each time.
Fred explained the same tricky concept four different ways without ever once sighing or rushing me through it.
Every concept Fred taught clicked right away, making my study sessions super efficient and stress-free.
One trial lesson with Fred had me booking more immediately; his teaching just clicked for me.
Balancing my crazy schedule was never a problem with Fred, who always adapted lessons to fit my needs and goals.
Progress felt painstakingly slow, but now I can see just how much Fred’s guidance helped me truly advance.
When I got stuck, he switched tactics on the fly, making complex ideas suddenly make sense without any stress.
Balancing my hectic schedule was a nightmare, but Fred always found a way around it. Each lesson was tailored to fit into my available time slots, and he made complicated concepts feel approachable. I appreciated how he encouraged me to share my challenges, allowing us to focus on specific areas that mattered most to me without any pressure.
Toward the end of our sessions, I finally grasped the tricky math concepts that had been holding me back. Fred has this way of simplifying the problems, breaking everything down into manageable steps that just made sense. In that moment, it felt like all the pieces finally clicked, and I could see how it all tied together.
Fred made a huge difference in my learning experience; his enthusiasm really sparked my interest in the subject. I actually started to enjoy it, which I never expected.
Fred really helped me understand difficult concepts in no time. I saw my grades improve almost immediately thanks to his awesome tutoring.
Fred was super patient when I got stuck on tricky concepts, always taking the time to explain things clearly. I couldn't have done it without his help.
