About Álvaro

I studied bassoon and contrabassoon in Portugal and the Netherlands. During and after my studies, I played with 14 orchestras in 7 European countries, including the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently, I hold an orchestral position at the North Netherlands Orchestra in Groningen, in addition to my work as a teacher and performing musician. For me, teaching is more than just imparting knowledge: I truly enjoy sharing the active experience of music with people who don't aspire to professional music, but who play with passion. At the same time, I mentor students pursuing a musical dream with equal dedication. Helping others grow, seeing them have fun, and surpassing themselves musically is what motivates me most as a teacher.

About the lesson

In my lessons, I work with repertoire that is challenging yet achievable, so students feel progress and have fun. I focus strongly on what's already going well and use that as positive motivation. From there, we explore together what can be improved and do targeted technical exercises to achieve those goals. I adapt my explanations, examples, and pace to each student individually and actively seek out their learning style. My lessons are calm yet stimulating. Fun, curiosity, and growth are central—if these are lacking, I see it as my responsibility.

Alvaro is an amazing teacher who always provides great tips and effective methods to improve technique and sound quality. Learning from him is always a pleasure, as he makes difficult topics easier to understand in a patient and kind way. He offers useful feedback that gives the motivation to the students to work further. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher who is willing to get the best version out of his students!

I met teacher Álvaro when I was 12 years old, and he was my second bassoon teacher. From the moment we met, we have never lost contact. More than teaching me how to play the bassoon, he taught me how to truly appreciate music and understand the values of being a musician.

Although, unfortunately, he was not my teacher for a long period of time, I still remember very clearly the important lessons he shared with me, which I continue to apply in my playing today.

I truly recommend teacher Álvaro. With him, you will not only learn how to play the bassoon well, but also how to develop a deeper musical understanding.
