About Nicholas

I am an NTU Biological Sciences graduate with Honours (Highest Distinction), a second major in Biomedical Structural Biology, and a GPA of 4.84/5.00. I was also awarded the Nanyang Scholarship and placed on the Dean's List twice. Having attained an A in H2 Biology and a Merit in H3 NTU Molecular Biology, I understand both the academic demands of the A-Level Biology syllabus and the challenges students face in mastering its content. I currently tutor 10 H2 Biology students (8 JC2 and 2 JC1) across the 9744 and 9477 syllabuses, and have previously taught another 5 students through both online and in-person lessons. My university education and research experience have deepened my understanding of biology beyond the A-Level syllabus. I draw on this background to explain not just what students need to know, but why biological processes work the way they do, helping them develop a more connected and intuitive understanding of the subject. Having navigated the A-Level Biology syllabus myself, I hope to help students approach the subject with greater confidence, clarity and curiosity.

My lessons focus on building a strong conceptual understanding of H2 Biology while developing the analytical and answering skills needed to perform well in examinations.

1. Building conceptual understanding

Rather than relying on rote memorisation, I break down complex biological processes into manageable concepts and help students understand the reasoning behind them. Where relevant, I draw connections between different topics and introduce insights from my university studies to help students appreciate the bigger picture.

2. Developing examination techniques

I guide students through past-year examination questions, focusing on question analysis, data interpretation and the application of biological concepts to unfamiliar scenarios. Particular attention is given to identifying question requirements, structuring responses and using precise biological terminology to meet marking requirements.

3. Personalised and interactive teaching

I adapt my teaching to each student's strengths, weaknesses and pace of learning. Lessons are discussion-based, allowing me to identify misconceptions, address gaps in understanding and encourage students to reason through questions independently rather than simply memorising model answers.

4. Tailored learning materials

I can provide supplementary notes, topic summaries and practice questions according to each student's needs. These include materials I personally developed or used during my A-Level preparation, alongside additional resources to reinforce key concepts.

Track record

One of my students, whom I tutored from late July to November 2024, improved from a U grade to a C in the final H2 Biology A-Level examination. Having experienced the demands of the H2 Biology syllabus firsthand, my goal is to help students study more effectively, develop confidence in tackling challenging questions and build a deeper understanding of biology that extends beyond examinations.

Details

My rate is $65/hour for H2 Biology tuition. Lessons are tailored to each student's learning needs, with a focus on conceptual understanding, examination techniques and targeted practice. Supplementary notes and learning materials can be provided where appropriate, at no additional charge. Both online and in-person lessons can be discussed depending on availability. I will be available for lessons from Dec 2026.
